Satyamev Jayate Episode 5 Review

Satyamev Jayate highlighted a very emotional topic of love and honour killing. The simple act of falling in love opens up a world of emotions and reactions which sometimes culminate in crime — the death of the couple. Even if they escape death, lovers who go against religious and community barriers still have to face harassment and censure from society and, due to this pressure, rejection from their families.

Episode five of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, aired on June 3, 2012 raised the issue of honour killing in India. Guests on the show included couples who tied the knot by going against their families, relatives who lost their loved ones on the name of honour killing, people who help such couples and others.

The episode began with a couple who had an inter-religious marriage. The two have been running for their lives from pillar to post ever since they got married. As the pained duo spoke about the trauma they have to deal with for marrying against their parents’ wishes, hundreds who had turned up on the sets shed tears showing their empathy for the troubled couple.

27-year-old Rizwan Rahman from Kolkata lost his life for marrying a Hindu girl Priyanka. He was found dead close to a railway track. Police claims that he committed suicide, but his family is not ready to accept this. They have no clue about Priyanka’s whereabouts. Is she even alive?

Manoj and Babli from a village in Haryana had the same ‘Gotra’. Both of them were brutally murdered for tying the knot. Manoj’s mother and sister are still fighting for justice despite being threatened many times to withdraw the complaint.

The show also hosted a few representatives of the Khap Panchayat who believe that the rules their forefathers have laid down must be followed at any cost. Aamir confronted members of the Panchayat and asked if the laws set by them was bigger that the law set by the Indian Constitution.Aamir discusses this grave social practice bravely. Once again he doesn’t sit in judgment, but shows no hesitation in voicing his opinion.

Dr Alka Jain’s parents were against her marriage with Dr Uday Patkar. Fearing rejection from society, Alka’s parents didn’t accept her for years. However, they later realized that their daughter is happy and accepted her with open arms.

The founder of Love Commondo was invited and he opened with the statement “Pyaar karna paap nahi hai aur virodhi hamara baap nahi hai“.

Sona Mahapatra ends the show on a beautiful note with song written by Ram Sampath.

Aamir is not immune from being criticized, people are complaining of show’s consistently boring treatment.

No doubt about Aamir’s noble intentions but shedding copious amounts of tears every Sunday, which has become a regular feature on show, is somewhat unbearable. It seems whole tear shedding drama has been scripted to keep TRPs of the show high.

While theme song hints that Aamir has travelled across the country and met people, the show has been shot entirely inside the suffocating environment of dull studio.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is highly upset with Aamir Khan for showing only one side of the story in previous show. The association has asked for an apology from Aamir.
