The heroic exploits and inner struggles of Arjun are woven into the film's narrative so convincingly that you tend to forget this is animation.

The characters' features are drawn sharply, giving the film the look of Japanese manga. The action has a martial arts-movie feel to it, and thus the violence -- also the sight of severed torsos -- may be too graphic for younger audiences.

The Warrior Prince is not at par with groundbreaking flicks like WALL·E (that came from the same production house), thanks to moments of technical amateurishness, it’s definitely a forward step for animation. Moreover, it’s not another children’s film and can be relished by grown-ups as well. Indian kids who are neck-deep in Japanese anime might experience something fresh and adults will be compelled to test their memory.

The animation in the film is good, but certainly not at par with Disney films internationally, which is made even more obvious by the promo of the new Pixar film “Brave” screened just before the film. Some scenes, such as the one in which Arjun aims for the eye of a fish by looking at its reflection in the water are well done.

I’m assuming that everyone who goes to see Arjun: The Warrior Prince will already be familiar with the story. So the pleasure lies in the telling. The first half moves like a ponderous history lesson. The narrative picks up pace in the second half but the film never soars. Oddly, for an animation film aimed at children, it also features some startling violence, with headless bodies making appearances in the battle scenes. (No Ratings Available)
