Plot

In 1947 when the maps of India and Pakistan were being drawn, an oversight ensured that the village of Paglapur didn’t find a place in either country. The village had the distinction of housing the largest mental asylum in the region and in the melee that ensued during partition, the asylum inmates broke loose, drove away the villagers and established their own republic in Paglapur. And that’s how it stayed for the next 60 years!

While the world outside changed, Paglapur remained isolated, with no electricity, television or sanity! Now, decades after the world forgot this village, a NASA scientist of Indian origin, Raj/Agasthya (same name as Akshay Kumar had in Jaaneman) and his wife, Manali find themselves on the road to Paglapur. Raj is working on a top secret project for creating a device to communicate with aliens. So why is he in a village whose colourful inhabitants include a man who speaks in gibberish, another who thinks he is a lamp post and everyone else who think Mahatma Gandhi is still around, fighting for independence?

Joker doesn’t have the usual soppy romance nor does it have the vehemence of intense fighting scenes. But it has a well-structured storyline, a really good supporting cast, a foot-tapping item song with all the jhatkas and matkas by Chitrangda Singh, and some great scenes that will make you laugh out loud. All in all, I would just like to say that it’s a breath of fresh air and worth a watch. You won’t be disappointed.I was thoroughly appalled, mainly at myself for enjoying it.

To start with, "Joker" is not a bad film at all and what is heartening to see is that it has been made with noble intentions of giving something new to the audience. But these are only good things about the film.It seems that director fails to decide what he is aiming for - entertainment, sattire, hard core comedy or sci-fi adventure. 

To make it clear, "Joker" is an entertaining film but really breaks down in last 15 minutes and that will leave audience wanting for more especially with such a short running time. Go for this one if you like experimentation otherwise watching this one is not a joke!

Despite everything going in its favor, JOKER falls flat on its face! JOKER runs out of gas as soon as director Shirish Kunder establishes the plot, because neither does the comic quotient work, nor do the aliens [fake and actual] salvage the show. In fact, the film makes a mockery of everything you may have seen or heard of UFOs and aliens.While bits and pieces of the first half is tolerable, the film goes completely awry in its post-interval portions. Seriously, what was Kunder thinking while penning and executing this one? Imagine an alien dancing to Indian songs and also doing pelvic thrusts!!! Yes, you read that right! On the whole, JOKER is a joke of a film. Disaster!

Unfortunately, Joker isn’t as awful as you expect it to be, falling a few degrees short of entering the ‘So Bad It’s Good’ category, a list which has had two brilliant additions this year. Players and Jism 2 catered to those with the macabre taste for films that are so terrible at their very core – and so unintentionally funny – that you would want them in your collection of films to be watched on a drunken night with friends. Joker, sadly, doesn’t make the cut even there. Total fail.

So what happens if a film -- one ostensibly in the guise of a comedy -- doesn't try too hard? The humour here isn't grating, overdone, outrageous, offensive, excruciating, unwatchable. There isn't a single line in Kunder's film that actually works, leaving us with a film that, while commendably brisk in a 100-minute package, refuses to get going at all. Does Joker hold up, then, as a children's film? Not a chance. It's clean, sure, bereft of swearing or innuendo (yet with a sultry item song) but it's also daft. The aliens aren't anything to write home about.
