A "capsule" hotel — featuring science-fiction design and bedrooms just long enough for most people to lie down in, in Xi'an, capital of central China's Shaanxi province — has been doing very good business.
The report said the budget hotel near the Shanghai Railway Station was
the first capsule hotel in China to be built to international standards.
All of the capsules are imported from Japan
where capsule hotels originated, and each is equipped with independent
sockets, clocks, lights, TV and wireless Internet service. The hotel
also has a public lavatory, shower room, smoking room and shared guest
room.
Like most of capsule hotels in Japan, the one in Shanghai is for men only. The hotel includes 86 "capsule"in nine areas in accordance with the 12
constellations, among others, the ‘Leo' capsules are reserved for those
who snore.
The hotel charges 59-65 yuan (about 9.4-10.3 U.S. dollars) per person
per night. The 480-square-meter building consists of 86 capsules in nine
rooms named after star signs to reflect the space theme.
The "Capsule hotel" concept originated in Japan, featuring a large number
of extremely small "rooms" intended to provide cheap and basic
overnight accommodation for office workers who need emergency
accommodation.
