Plot

The 'Inspired' remake is based on the life of Kanjibhai (Paresh Rawal), an antique shopkeeper. When a tornado destroys his antique store, he begins to disbelieve in God. The film revolves around his journey at taking down God which he is unable to do, but clearly doesn't realize, and soon begins to fight all the priests of the city, which starts mayhem until Lord Krishna (Akshay Kumar) pays Kanji an unexpected visit.

It is loosely based on the Gujarati play, Kanji Virrudh Kanji and also Hindi play, Kishen vs Kanhaiya. Story also resonates on the lines of The Man Who Sued God a 2001 Australian film, starring Billy Connolly and directed by Mark Joffe.

The movie comes up with an unique and brilliant concept that makes us come face to face with the reality of our daily life. OMG Oh My God exposes the dark truth behind the 'paakhandi babas' and fake godmen, who fool their devotees with some moneymaking gimmicks, devised in the name of God. The movie impresses us with its sensitive take on devotion. A big hats off to the director Umesh Shukla, who presented such a great piece with his gutsy attempt of entering in a sensitive territory.

Paresh is wonderful as the stubborn, smart and eccentric Kanji. He gets a few fiery scenes in court, but the film sags because the other characters are so flimsy. Mithun Chakraborty, in a hideous wig, plays a weird, fey guru. Govind Namdeo is a godman who constantly eats fruits and shakes with anger almost every time he speaks. Eventually OMG Oh My God! dissipates into a lecture. The intentions are good, but the preaching is boring.Paresh Rawal, as usual, rises above the material. He is the force in this film.

Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal -- this is a deadly combo when it comes to satirist flicks. The duo is by now famous when it comes to keeping the audience in splits with their faultless humorist timing. Paresh Rawal is acknowledged as a supremely accomplished and consummate actor of our times. The veteran carries the film on his shoulders and executes this challenging character with candor. He's the show-stopper, the scene stealer. Akshay kumar is significantly present in the second half and is fabulous in a role that seems tailor-made for him. His sequences with Paresh contribute enormously to the delightful moments.

Mithun Chakraborty is incredible in a role that has negative shades. Om Puri is exceptional in a cameo. Mahesh Manjrekar is effective. Govind Namdev leaves a strong impression. Nikhil Ratnaparkhi is satisfactory. Murli Sharma and Poonam Jhawar are alright. Sonakshi Sinha and Prabhu Dheva sparkle in a song.

Despite its unusual, catchy premise, Oh My God!, co-written and directed by Umesh Shukla (who directed the Hindi version of the play that also starred Rawal in the lead), never exploits its full potential. While the film makes a solid case against blind faith, the excesses of religious rituals, and the self-appointed “collection agents” of God, it never sticks its neck out far enough, choosing instead to go with a cop-out ending, as if afraid to be too provocative. What’s more the film can’t shake off its stage-play feel, and suffers from some embarrassingly hammy acting from supporting players like Govind Namdeo, who plays an easily angered godman who’s at the end of his patience.
