Barfi : Hindi Movie Review and Critics Ratings

Barfi : Hindi Movie Review

Average Rating: 3/5
(Based on web reviews)

Plot
When he was born his mother and father had named him Murphy, but all others started calling him Barfi! He is quite the charmer who is all the time prepared with a practical joke and mischief up his sleeve; particularly with the ladies! Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) is the talk of the town in Darjeeling. The biggest surprise is that he could neither speak nor listen yet he is the biggest talk of the town!

His has bitter-sweet relationship with 2 ladies who are young and beautiful. They are Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) and Shruti (Ileana D'cruz). His relationship with them sets in motion a series of events which would turn his life upside down! A heart-warming story of unselfish love, and about discovering contentment in the smallest things in life! Its message conveys you that no matter how hard your life may be, 'Don't Worry. Be Barfi!'

Reviews
On the whole, BARFI! is unusual for Bollywood. You don't formulate movies like BARFI! targeting its box-office potential or its commercial prospects. You create such films for the passion of cinema. BARFI! is akin to a whiff of fresh air. Its foremost triumph is that it leaves you with a powerful emotion: Happiness! I sincerely believe, no Hindi movie buff should deprive himself/herself of watching this brilliant motion picture. Also, the viewer needs to savor Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana's paramount performances, one of the strengths of this movie. Strongly recommended!

Barfi is more than ably handled by Anurag Basu. He remarkably immerses you in his world of sounds and verbose silences, recreating Chaplin's antics, stripping two superstars down to basics and sensitively spinning a magical world of unconditional love. The narrative is too non-linear at times, and the pace slows in the second half. That apart, it's truly path-breaking for Bollywood.

Barfi! is that rare film that can make you smile and make you cry in the same scene. Its technical brilliance is only outdone by its emotional complexity and depth. Pritam’s music adds a nice silent-era charm to this already fantastic story, making it an occasion when words simply aren’t enough.

Basu’s Kites could’ve done with better writing. This one suffers from the lack of a competent editor. Most assume the editor is supposed to chop a film by as many dragging minutes as possible, which is absolutely true. But they also bring a certain rhythm to a story, effectively taking things forward – long passages, short passages, humour alternating with drama etc. You sorely miss that in this movie. It remains a series of perfect looking chaotic montage shots, going back and forth, forth and back. This worked for Basu’s Life In A Metro. There were six stories to follow there. There’s only one here.
